In the 19th century, pale skin was such an important beauty deal that middle - and upper class women avoided the sun. This changed during the 1920s; as more people made their livings indoors, suntans became a sign that the wearer could afford leisure time.
Similarly, throughout early history, body fat was appealing because it showed that a person was prosperous. Today, when the high body-fats are more than the norm, thinness turns heads. Why? Because slimness indicates that a person has the time and income to spend on gym and workouts. What does this mean? Simply that beauty is not a fixed set deal.
